The Codex defines the Brotherhood, documenting their history, establishing their tactics, doctrine, rank responsibilities, et cetera. It also contains the axioms of the founder of the Brotherhood, High Elder Roger Maxson's, and is maintained and updated by Brotherhood scribes.[1]

An integral part of the Codex are the Scrolls, which record the lives of the members of the order.[2] Each Scroll contains the Brother's name, notable deeds (such as battles, tech recoveries, and promotions) and ends with a detail description of their death. Maintaining the Scrolls is the duty of the Head Librarian of each Brotherhood bunker.[3][4] However, the Elder in command of a chapter may order certain names to be struck from the Codex in the case of desertion or insubortination.[2]
