I understand that thermalite can shrink and crack as the blocks were saturated when laid. Question is what is the correct procedure now? There are three hairline cracks running the entire height of the wall from damp-course to the leaded top of the wall, nothing below the damp-course which is concrete block. Using Thermalite blocks in the inner leaf of the cavity wall can meet U-values down to 0.17 W/m2K with a 300mm footprint. If Thermalite Enhanced Construction Details are used, this will also dramatically reduce the heat loss through thermal bridging at the junctions of elements. Fixing to Thermalite, Durox and other lightweight blocks really requires special fixings which can grab the block from inside the hole you drill. Plugs and fixings that expand as you screw the fixing into the plug tend to break away the inner surface of the hole and become loose in no time at all. What might seem like a disastrous situation, does not necessarily mean the end of the engine’s lifespan. The cracks can lead to a series of problems, for that reason they need to be eliminated. We have removed the pebbledash from our 30s house which had an extension added to it in the 80s made from 'solid' 9' thermalite blocks. This has revealed a few cracks that go straight through the blocks. These are only a couple of mm wide but this is the time to sort it out. I guess if it were 2 leaves of brick I would cut out the damaged brickwork and replace but it seems to be more difficult with a solid wall and supporting the existing wall plate.What about stitching the damaged area? Would this be worth it or just go with the expanded metal.
